Structural Design of TCNJ STEM Building
Progress
FALL SEMESTER
09/14/2013
Dimensioned proposed spaces.
09/16/2013
Created preliminary schematic design in a rectangular footprint.
09/22/2013
Edited footprint to include possible extensions of the third floor, see rough draft schematic design in Documents.
09/24/2013
Met with Dr. Bechtel to disucss edits to layout.
10/01/2013
Decided to add a dormered fourth floor with cantilever features to the building and move the structures lab to the center of the buidling to make it the focal point.
10/13/2013
Edited layout to achieve better overlay for column placement. These layouts can be found in Documents. Determined internal live loads.
10/20/2013
Designed fourth floor cantilevers to allow for full height rooms within the dormered section.
10/22/2013
Determined external loads on buildings: roof, wind, snow.
10/23/2013
Modeled building frame in VisualAnalysis.
10/24/2013-10/29/2013
Worked on progress presentation.
11/12/2013
Designed roof truss geometry, modeled in visual analysis.
11/15/2013
Developed spreadsheet to calculate live load reductions.
11/25/2013
Finalized preliminary building frame model in VisualAnalysis (See Documents for images)
SPRING SEMESTER
02/5/2014
Reduced live loads were added to VisualAnalysis building frame model.
2/18/2014
Meshing on VisualAnalysis was refined in order to prevent errors in VisualAnalysis model and produce more accurate results.
2/25/14
Due to restrictions on the number of elements in building model, the model was divided into two seperate files.
3/20/14
Final model troubleshooting performed.
3/31/14
Fourth floor was analyzed.
4/3/14
Floors one through three were analyzed.
4/8/14
Sections were designed and selected for all floors of the building. The design consists of wide flange W sections as well as hollow HSS sections.
4/11/14
Quantity takeoffs were performed for the structural steel that will be used for the project.
